"Down Under" Expressions for Outdoor Entertaining

106 20
Australians enjoy their pools, patios, homes and gardens just as much as their American counterparts. And with a mild, subtropical climate, residents in Australia and parts of New Zealand enjoy an outdoor lifestyle similar to folks living in California, Florida and other sunny climates. Only thing is, their summer is our winter -- so if you traveled between the two (or three) countries, you'd enjoy six months of summer!
One thing that's different: their expressions, although Australians and New Zealanders get a kick out of American expressions too. If you find yourself in Australia or New Zealand at an outdoor get-together, barbecue or pool party, you might hear some of these words.

Afo, Arvo

Afternoon (Australian)

American Hotdog

A hot dog or frankfurter.

Bach

Some holiday house or vacation home.

Banger

Sausage. As popular as a hot dog in America.

Barbie

This is probably one of the easiest: barbecue. As in, "Throw another shrimp on the barbie." A popular meal, cooking method, outdoor gathering and party -- just like other places. Not the doll.

Bathers

Swimming costume. Also, swimsuit or bathing suit.

Boogie Board

A half-sized, hybrid surfboard.

Brickie

Bricklayer.

Bring a Plate

If you're invited to a bbq or party, the request is to contribute a side dish, not byop!

Bun Fight

A party or social gathering with food. Not an incident that might occur should actor/director/Aussie Mel Gibson crash the party.
