    • 1). Put on your gloves and your safety goggles. Pour the metal etching solution into a corrosion-proof container to cover the entire piece metal you wish to rust for two hours. You can obtain metal etching solution at any home supply store.

    • 2). Take the metal out and rinse soaking it in a solution of water and vinegar consisting of 1 cup vinegar for every 2 gallons. You will need to make enough solution to soak the entire piece of metal.

    • 3). Rinse off the metal and then place in a hot salt water solution overnight. Use 1 cup of salt for every 2 gallons of water, heated to at least 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove and allow to dry. Rust should form over the surface quickly.

    • 4). Spray the item with water occasionally until you get the desired rust effect.
