Tough Golf CoursesPros Should Get On With It!
Irish Golf Tour Operator Mike Ryan of Executive Hire briefly examines why pro golfers have bemoaned the challenge that lies ahead of them at Chambers bay.
The selection of Chambers Bay has evoked much commentary and criticism from the Pros of late and we wonder why all this fuss. Yes, its a major challenge, but is this not a Major event in the pro-golf calendar? A Major requires a course that truly separates the wheat from the chaff.
All players will play the same 18 holes, so its the same challenge for all. Whether they play a supposedly easier course a more difficult course the objective is still the same.
Lets consider the amateur golfers who will be watching this massive event world wide. All folks trying to get their handicap down week in week out. People who are delighted to sign a card that is only over par by a single digit number after just one round! Surely then this typical golfer will be entertained and able to relate very well to the struggles of the pro golfer who now has to adjust to what seem to be abnormal conditions before he overcomes them. The last time I checked, thats the hallmark of entertainment!
Nobody complained when the Irish Open went to Royal County Down in May this year. Eventual winner Soren Kjeldsen shot rounds of 69 70 and 67 before the final day when the course bit back and he shot 76. Thats half a shot more per hole on his previous round on Day 3. Part of links golf is overcoming the elements, and a great links golfer is great at overcoming the elements. Royal County Down could have thrown that type of weather at the Pros all week. If its the weather or other challenges such as course length, speedy greens, narrow fairways or all of the above, the golfer best equipped to deal with all of these typical factors of golf will surface to the top.
We love it when a course bites back and thats typical of an Irish links course. The Atlantic coast of Ireland from top to bottom is home to some of the worlds most established Old Style links such as Ballybunion and Lahinch. You can play these and Royal County Down as part of our Irish Golf Vacations packages which we can customize to your needs. We also cater for non golfers in your touring party with a full schedule of private site seeing tours.
