Sports-themed cakes can be easy to create for a birthday. A football or baseball cake does not require special designs --- you can create it with a simple round or football shaped cake pan and add decorative touches with icing.

A baseball cap is another sports-related cake design that is easy to create. The cap is a dome cake with half of a round cake making up the rim of the hat. Use icing colored in the colors of the boy's favorite team.

Dinosaurs and Animals

You can create an easy dinosaur cake by making a sheet cake and decorating the top with a landscape design and toy dinosaurs. Use green icing to make the ground, blue icing for water and chocolate for tree trunks. You also can make a cake in the shape of a dinosaur's head by cutting a round cake into the shape of the head and decorating with candies and frosting.

A teddy bear cake is a simple design made with a round cake for the face and two cupcakes for the ears. You can add an additional cupcake to the top of the round cake to create a teddy bear nose. Use dark chocolate icing to draw eyes, a nose and a mouth on the teddy bear.

Race Cars

A simple way to use race cars for your boy's birthday cake is to make a racetrack. Use chocolate icing to create a large oval track on the top of the cake, and put green icing in the center to symbolize the grass inside the track. Put toy cars on the track and racetrack flags in the center of the cake.

Superheroes

Use Spiderman or Spongebob, or any other favorite character, as inspiration for a boy's birthday cake. A Spiderman head can be made with a dome cake tin or a football-shaped cake tin. Decorate Spidey with red icing for the head, dark chocolate icing to create the webbing and white icing for the eyes.

Spongebob cakes are a simple square design with yellow icing for the body. Use fondant icing to cut shapes for the eyes, tie, mouth, legs, arms and pants.
