How to Change a Seat Post for a Road Bike
- 1). Measure from the top of your saddle to the bottom of your road bike frame. Measure from the tip of your saddle to the handlebars. These measurements will help you determine the height and position of your replacement seat post/saddle combination.
- 2). Locate the seat post binder. This binder secures your seat post to your road bike frame. Most road bike seat post binders include an allen bolt that tightens the clamp in place. Alternatively, there may be a flip-lock quick release.
- 3). Loosen the allen bolt, or open the flip-lock quick release.
- 4). Remove the old seat post from the frame.
- 1). Ensure that your new seat post is smooth and clean. There should be no grit or grime on the surface, or anything that might compromise its fit inside the bicycle seat tube.
- 2). Apply a light bearing grease to the portion of the seat post that inserts into the bicycle frame. This step includes aluminum, steel and titanium seat posts only. According to Bike-Manual.com, carbon seat posts should not be greased.
- 3). Twist the new seat post into the seat tube of your bicycle frame. Lightly tighten the seat post binder.
- 4). Attach your saddle to the new seat post. Ensure that the height and fore/aft position of the saddle match the measurements you took from your old seat post/saddle combination. Raise or lower the seat post as needed to adjust the height of the saddle.
- 5). Tighten the seat post binder bolt. Be cautious when tightening the bolt on carbon seat posts as overtightening can damage carbon.
