How to Become a Landlord for Special Needs Housing in New York
- 1). Review the guidelines to become a special needs landlord in your county. Each county in New York has different rules regarding licensing requirements, if you decide to run a supportive housing or halfway house facility. Talk to your county clerk's office to find out what you need to do.
- 2). Contact the Supportive Housing Network of New York at (646) 619-9640. Since supportive housing is partially paid by the government; you will need to find out if the state government has any needs for additional housing. Find out what the requirements are to become a landlord.
- 3). Find a non-profit organization in your area that provides housing for adults with special needs. Call or visit the organization to determine if they need any landlords or additional housing. The non-profit will also be able to provide you with any local resources.
- 4). Register as a Section 8 landlord. Although not all Section 8 tenants will have special needs, many will have some type of disability. If you decide you want to accept Section 8 tenants, you will need to contact your local Housing and Urban Development office. Before you can accept Section 8 tenants, your rental property will have to be inspected to be sure it is a safe and clean property. There are four field offices throughout the state of New York located in Albany (518) 464-4200, New York City (212) 264-8000, Buffalo (716) 551-5755, and Syracuse (315) 477-0616.
- 5). Call the landlord outreach hotline if you are in New York City at (212) 306-8555. This hotline serves to help landlords registered as a Section 8 landlord and can help answer other questions related to special needs tenants.
