DIY: Interior Handrail Mounting
- 1). Measure the staircase by extending your tape measure from the beginning of the top landing to the floor at the bottom landing. Add 2 feet to the result to obtain an accurate measurement.
- 2). Decide on the height of your new handrail by consulting the local building code regulations for required guidelines. Measure the desired height from the top and bottom landings and make a mark at each point with your pencil. Snap a mark between the two points with your chalk line. This will be your mounting guide.
- 3). Locate the studs behind the wall throughout the full length of the handrail using your stud finder. Mark each stud with your pencil. Not all of the studs will line up with your desired bracket placements so use those which work best for your installation. Most handrails require at least one anchor bracket every 48 inches.
- 4). Align each of the handrail brackets with a stud location. Drill pilot holes for the bracket screws using your power drill and small drill bit. Fasten each handrail bracket to the wall using the included screws and your screwdriver.
- 5). Lay the handrail into the mounted handrail brackets and fasten in position with screws.
