Hairstyles for Scene Kids

    • Kids who choose to dress, act and look "scene" are interested in expressing their creativity and standing out from the crowd. Although the style has a few common undertones (dark hair, unnatural colors), it is relaxed enough to allow each person his or her own unique look. To achieve scene hairstyles, kids can decide whether to color, chop, spike or curl their hair and with a few quick steps, can be in the scene.

    Harajuku

    • Kids with parents' permission to permanently dye their hair may find the Harajuku style, named after the area in Japan where it originated, to be a great scene style. Hair is razor-cut choppy, with layers framing the face. Harajuku style requires hair to be dyed not-found-in-nature colors such as neon pink, jet blue and bright orange. For dark haired kids, hair must be bleached first to remove color, then the bright dyes applied.

    Rockabilly

    • Kids today may not have been alive for the first wave of rockabilly music, but the hairstyles of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Bettie Page are back in popularity. For boys, the style requires two things -- height and shine. Blow dry hair straight back, then apply a heavy pomade. Blow dry again, pointing the dryer underneath the bangs to puff up the hair as high as possible (hair should look like a wedge from the side). For girls, the rockabilly look requires long hair, curls (natural, permed or roller) and if desired, big, thick bangs. Set hair with a shine spray all over.

    Emo

    • The emo style comes from the word "emotional," often associated with quiet, brooding musicians. The hairstyle involves mostly black (natural or dyed) hair with a small area of colored stripes-- bright neon or subdued hues of purple or blue. Because of emo's association with shyness, the hairstyle often features a hank of hair pulled down over one eye (possibly to hide behind). Hair is razor-cut and can be just about any length. Sometimes, the back and top are spiked up with gel.
