How to Stain Black Walnut
- 1). Sand the black walnut wood with sandpaper to smooth the surface. If you want a darker stained finish, use a medium grit sandpaper. For a lighter stained look, use a fine grit sandpaper. Make sure to sand the wood in the same direction as the wood grain.
- 2). Wipe the surface of the wood with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove all traces of sanding dust.
- 3). Move the black walnut wood to an outdoor location and place it on top of a plastic drop cloth.
- 4). Open the can of wood stain and stir it thoroughly with a paint stirrer to mix the contents.
- 5). Insert a foam paintbrush into the stain and drag the brush along the edge of the can to remove excess stain.
- 6). Apply the stain to the black walnut wood using long, even strokes. Continue reapplying stain to the brush and painting the wood until the entire piece of wood is evenly covered in stain.
- 7). Allow the wood to sit for between five and 15 minutes.
- 8). Wipe the entire surface of the wood with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth to remove the excess stain. Do not press down onto the wood; lightly wipe the cloth across the surface, moving in the direction of the wood grain.
- 9). Allow the wood to sit for eight hours to dry.

Use a clean bristled paintbrush to apply two coats of polyurethane to the entire piece of black walnut to seal it. Allow the first coat to dry for four hours before applying the second coat.
