    Software

    • To make a picture icon for AIM you need to have access to a computer program that will let you re-size an image. You could buy something like Adobe Photoshop which is a leading computer photo imaging software or you could use the default image software for Windows based computers called MS Paint. The actual program doesn't matter, just as long as it lets you re-size images. MS Paint can be found in the "Accessories" folder under the "Programs" listing on your computer's "Start" menu.

    Size

    • AIM icons must be no large than 50 pixels by 50 pixels. This is a perfect square. If the image is any larger than this you will not be able to import it into AIM. If the image is any smaller than this you run the risk of it looking pixellated or distorted in some way after uploading as AIM will automatically re-size it to 50 pixels by 50 pixels. To achieve this size you could go into the image settings in your computer software and re-size an image specifically to this size, or you could crop a smaller portion of an image to this size and disregard the rest of the picture.

    Importing

    • To set your picture as your icon in AIM, open the AIM software. Next, click on the "Preferences" tab at the top of the main AIM buddy list window. Click on the option that reads "Buddy Icons." This will bring up the standard buddy icon window. Click the button that reads "Browse PC." This will allow you to search your hard drive for the picture icon you've made. Select the image from your hard drive and click on the "OK" button. After a few seconds your account will refresh and your new icon will appear on both your Buddy List as well as any IM conversations you have.
