How to Get Chosen to Carry the Olympic Torch
- 1). Check the current torchbearer nomination and application guidelines for specific information on the processes being implemented by the given host city and country.
- 2). Locate the current Olympic host committee website and complete the official torchbearer application form online. Paper versions should also be available online and through local outlets.
- 3). Read the list of requirements for successful applicants and make sure you fit the criteria. For the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the requirements included a patriotism and demonstrated dedication to the Olympic Movement, past contributions "to the building of a harmonious society," distinguished professional and social contributions, dedication to community services and involvement in previous Olympic Games. The 2010 Vancouver Olympic torchbearer applications were also based on community improvement and an overall positive spirit.
- 4). Complete and submit your application online or by mail. A panel of corporate, community and governmental representatives will be assembled to process and judge the applications. In some cases applicants must publish their application information in a local newspaper to verify their claims. A list of preferred applicants will then be submitted to the host city or country's Olympic committee, which will review the selections, conduct any necessary background checks and approve a final list of torchbearers.
