How to Make an Origami Spring
- 1). Fold the paper into 12 equal parts horizontally to create rows. Open the paper and lay it flat.
- 2). Fold the paper into six equal parts vertically to create columns. Use a mountain fold that alternates which way the paper is folded. The paper will now have a series of rectangles defined by the creases in the paper.
- 3). Create a series of "valley folds" across the paper. Start by folding a diagonal line across the rectangle on the lower right corner of the paper. Fold this line from the lower right corner of the rectangle to the upper left corner.
- 4). Mirror this fold in the rectangle directly to the left by creating a crease from the upper right corner of the rectangle to the lower left corner. Continue this pattern across the paper until you reach the end of the row.
- 5). Repeat the diagonal folds along all the rows of rectangles. Make sure all the creases are sharp and defined.
- 6). Hold the right edge of the paper. Begin folding in the creases starting with the first column of rectangles. Fold the diagonal creases under the horizontal creases. The paper will naturally fold creating a circular design.
- 7). Pull out the folded flap that is tucked in under the circle. When it is fully pulled out it will create a three-dimensional spiraled design. The top end of the paper will now appear twisted while the rest of the paper will resemble a hollow cylinder.
- 8). Twist the second column of rectangles carefully in the reverse direction of the first row. Be sure all the creases are well folded. The paper will twist easily into the form of another spiral. Repeat this with all the remaining columns of rectangles. The direction of the twist with naturally alternate each time.
- 9). When the final column is twisted pull out the folded flap that is tucked under the circle, just as it was in the first column. This will lock the design in place. The spring is now finished.

Hold the central spiral of the spring and squeeze it gently. The spring will expand and contract to make a kinetic origami form.
