Unique Uses for Old CDs

    Drink Coasters

    • Old CDs can help protect your furniture from spills and water marks by being repurposed into drink coasters. You can either use CDs as they are or line them with self-stick felt to keep them from slipping. To line your CDs, place up to eight self-stick felt dots at equal distance from each other in the center of the outer circle on the unprinted side of the CD. Turn the CD over and you have a one-of-a-kind coaster.

    Sun Catcher

    • You can make a simple decorative sun catcher using two or more CDs. Glue two CDs together, reflective sides out, and hang from a piece of fishing wire or dark cord. You can string multiple pairs of CDs along the same piece of cord to make a longer sun catcher, or place a bell at the end of the cord to make a CD wind chime. Hang indoors or outdoors near a window to reflect the sun into the house.

    CD Scarecrows

    • The reflective back of a CD makes a great modern scarecrow for your garden. Hang several in your vegetable garden or glue them to stakes in your flower bed to reflect the sun. The glare off the CDs frighten away birds, squirrels, rabbits and other garden intruders and keeps them from eating your vegetables and flowers. If you're especially crafty, you can even make a traditional scarecrow with a CD for the face.

    Decoration

    • You can easily decorate your home using old CDs. Arrange a group of them on the wall for a piece of wall art, or string several from a mobile to make a hanging sculpture. You can also cut up old CDs into fragments and use the pieces to create a tile mosaic. Glue the fragments to an inexpensive lamp base for a modern, reflective lamp. You can also use them to refinish an old table top or frame them for an original piece of recycled artwork.
