There are several different versions as to how the cocktail called the Cosmopolitan was originated. Today there are numerous versions that not only change the look of this unique cocktail but the taste as well. The basic ingredients are vodka, which is the base spirit, triple sec and juices which are usually lime and cranberry juice. Also, sometimes the cocktail is mistaken for a martini as it is served in a martini glass. The quality of the ingredients will dictate the quality of the drink. The amount of vodka and triple sec can be increased or decreased to make the cocktail stronger or weaker. The cranberry juice is strictly for color and the quantity used should be minimal.

Other alternatives to the cocktail recipes cosmopolitan style drink will show either an increase or decrease in the basic ingredients and/or additional ingredients are added. For example, in the recipe noted later the amount of vodka can be increased by half an ounce and one ounce of Cointreau can be added. The amount of cranberry juice can be decreased byounce and the garnish can be changed to a slice of orange.

Let's not forget about the Blue Cosmo. This vibrant sky blue cocktail uses Blue Curacao instead of triple sec and the garnish is a twisted lemon slice to offset the blue.

No matter what your taste is, this fruity cocktail can transform from one version into another very easily by slightly altering the basic recipe. Cocktail recipes cosmopolitan style should be a basic in the list of choices you offer to your guests. It is easy to make and everyone will love it. The basic recipe for the Cosmopolitan follows:

Cosmopolitan (basic recipe; serving for 1)
• 1 oz vodka
•oz triple sec
•oz lime juice
•oz cranberry juice

In a cocktail shaker, add a handful of ice. Next add all of the ingredients noted above, cover tightly and shake vigorously. Strain this beautiful mixture into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a wedge of lime hanging off the rim and enjoy.
