Naming Your Children
I am amazed at the creativity that parents put nowadays on naming their kids.
We already have people like Beyonce, Malia, Solange, and so many more.
Don't you think this is the most natural poetry of the world? People's names are more often than not the representation of the parents' dreams.
Years upon years of waiting for that one person comes into their life is bundled up in a few letters and those few letters will be forever on them.
A name is delightful thing for me.
I like calling people by name as oppose to giving them codes or a nickname pulled out of something he did back in high school.
I always settle for the name because that is who they are, that is theirs from their birth and I will not take that away from them.
Given that, parents should think carefully about what to give their children.
You have to remember that it is what you child will carry to his death.
The word he will hear most often and the word that is most intimate to him or her.
Below are some of the things you can consider when you are giving your child a name: 1.
Your generation is different from their generation.
You will be separated from your child by more than a decade.
That automatically means you belong to different generations.
What may be cool to you may totally fail in his time.
If you are totally incapable of being fashion forward when it comes to names, choose something that is timeless.
Now, timeless is different from old fashion.
For example, John is timeless.
Morgan is old fashion.
2.
Don't name him after a celebrity because celebrities have this tendency to self destruct and you wouldn't want your child to be named after a celebrity who hit a car with an umbrella after shaving her head.
There is the exact opposite, which is a celebrity that became too great till the day of his death that naming a kid after him is just too much of a pressure.
Go ahead and name you kid Lennon or Bono.
Let's see what will happen if he does pursue a career in music.
3.
Don't name your kid after a state.
It's a state for crying out loud.
I don't care if that state is the most memorable state in your life and your parents' and your grandparents'.
It's a state.
4.
Ethnic tradition is a no no even if you belong to that ethnicity.
One, you have to respect the tradition, whatever that is.
That's one of the things you hold sacred.
Second, don't put your kid through the torture of living the legacy of that tradition.
It's hard enough to grow up, let alone grow up with that whole background on you.
The golden rule is, name your kid with love.
It has to be a name he will like hearing.
