How to Craft with Styrofoam
- 1). Cut out all of the shapes and pieces you will need for your project. Crafting is a lot more fun when the pieces are ready ahead of time. The best cuts in Styrofoam are usually achieved with a floral knife, serrated knife, or X-acto knife. Cookie cutters can also be used to create fun shapes.
- 2). Create smooth edges by sanding down your Styrofoam. Because of its consistency, the surface of Styrofoam is not always smooth. Sanding will create surfaces more likely to take to gluing. You can use ordinary emery board to accomplish this.
- 3). Paint the Styrofoam using acrylic paints. Painting can be done using a stiff craft paint brush or by placing paint into a container and rolling Styrofoam pieces through the paint to coat the Styrofoam with color.
- 4). Attach pieces using glue. Craft glue is a good choice, but you can also use a glue gun. Hot glue is not advisable because the temperature can melt your Styrofoam. As you are the attaching pieces, rub them together to create a better bond. Rather than holding the pieces while they dry, insert toothpicks into the pieces to hold them while they dry.
