How to Clean Out Codecs
- 1). Click "Start," then "Control Panel."
- 2). Double-click on the System icon. The System Properties dialog box will open.
- 3). Click on the Hardware tab, then on the Device Manager button.
- 4). Click on the plus symbol next to "Sound, Video and Game Controllers."
- 5). Double-click on "Audio Codecs" or "Video Codecs."
- 6). Click on the Properties tab.
- 7). Click on the codec you want to remove, then click "Remove" at the bottom of the dialog box to remove the codec.
- 8). Click "OK" to close the dialog box.
- 1). Click "Start." Type "regedit" (without quotes) in the Search box.
- 2). Press "Enter" or "Return" on your computer's keyboard. The Windows Registry Editor application will open.
- 3). Scroll through the entries in the left pane of the Windows Registry Editor screen to the entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32." Double-click on the entry.
- 4). Click on the codec that you want to remove in the right pane of the Windows Registry Editor. Video codecs usually start with "vidc" and audio codecs usually end with an ".acm" extension.
- 5). Press "Delete" on your computer's keyboard. However, if you wish to only disable the codec and not remove it from your computer, double-click on the codec you want to disable. The Edit String dialog box will open. Add a semi-colon to the beginning of the value in the Value Data box, then click "OK."
- 6). Click the "X" in the upper right-hand corner to close the Windows Registry Editor screen after you have finished removing or disabling the codec(s).
- 7). Click "Start," "Turn off Computer," then "Restart" to restart your computer.
- 1). Click on your Mac's hard drive icon.
- 2). Click on the Library folder.
- 3). Click on your media player's folder (Quicktime or other media player).
- 4). Delete the codec files within the media player's folder. The files will have "codec" within its file name, the prefix "vidc" or the extension ".acm."
