How to Install a Ground PVC Drain Pipe
- 1). Dig a trench in the location where the new PVC sewer pipe will be installed. Make the trench 4 to 6 inches lower than where the pipe will be installed for easier installation access.
- 2). Wipe both ends of the existing pipes using a damp rag. Measure between the two existing pipe ends, and cut a new piece of PVC pipe to that length. Use a hacksaw or handsaw to make the cut, and be sure that the cut is straight. Remove any burrs from the cut pipe end using a utility knife.
- 3). Apply soapy water around each existing pipe end. Push a flexible rubber coupling fully onto each existing pipe end (make sure that the coupling fits the diameter of PVC pipe being installed).
- 4). Hold the newly-cut piece of pipe between the existing pipe cuts, and slip one rubber coupling half way onto the end of the new pipe. Then slip the other coupling half way onto the other end of the new pipe. Both couplings will now be half on the existing pipes, and half on the new pipe.
- 5). Tighten the metal metal hose clamps surrounding each end of both couplings, using a screwdriver (four hose clamps will be tightened, in all).
- 6). Wrap metal flashing around each coupling, and secure it in place with wire. Fill in the trench, making sure that the pipe is well supported underneath.
