How to Install a Network Adapter That is Compatible with Windows 98
- 1). Check the network adapter's system requirements to confirm that it is compatible with Windows 98. Many newer network adapters do not include drivers for older operating systems such as Windows 98, which can cause problems with the network adapter working properly.
- 2). Put the network adapter's installation disk into your computer. Choose to install the drivers and software utilities. You'll see some variation in the installation wizard depending on the network adapter manufacturer. Usually you click "Next" until the wizard completes. This process installs your network adapter drivers and any support utility software the card needs to work on Windows 98.
- 3). Go to "Start" then choose "Shut Down." Unplug your computer from your outlet or surge protector once it is shut down completely. Take off your computer's cover. The case removal method depends on the style of case that you're using. Basic computer cases use retaining screws on the back edges of the case. Other case models have swing out doors and sliding panels for easy access.
- 4). Look for a long, rectangular and horizontal slot near the back of the computer case. You might see several of these slots in a column.
- 5). Unscrew the screw on the metal slot cover located at the back of the case. This process opens up a hole in the back of the case so you can access the Ethernet port on the network adapter.
- 6). Insert the network adapter into the PCI slot using gentle, even pressure. You only have one way to properly insert the card and it should align easily with the PCI interface slot. Secure the card by using the screw from the slot cover to screw it into the back of the case. Return the case cover to the computer chassis and plug it back in.
