What Depth Cabinet Is the Best Over a Bathroom Sink?
- Bathroom cabinets over sinks, commonly called medicine cabinets, come in two basic styles. Surface mounted styles are simply hung on a wall with fasteners, much like a framed picture. Recessed cabinets are inserted inside a wall cavity flush with the surrounding walls.
- Surface mounted cabinets can be any depth but should not protrude enough to create a danger to people's heads or faces. They range in width from 20 to 60 inches to fit the varying dimensions of bathrooms and are available with left- or right-side hinges.
- Since most building walls are constructed of 2-by-4 lumber, recessed cabinets are normally 3½ inches deep to fit into the wall cavity. If the recessed area is less than 3½ inches deep, some styles have trim kits that enable the installer to adjust the shelf depths. Hinges are available on either side.
