How to Repair a Frayed Tribal Rug

    • 1). Vacuum the rug thoroughly to remove all dust and debris. Move the furniture off the rug to create work space.

    • 2). Clean the entire rug, focusing on the damaged areas. Heavy foot traffic usually causes frayed edges. These spots are likely to be soiled. Dab upholstery cleaner onto the stains. Blot the soiled areas until the stains are removed. Allow the rug to dry.

    • 3). Trim the frayed portions with a pair of upholstery shears. Tuck loose threads underneath another thread that is still affixed to the rug, using a seam ripper.

    • 4). Thread an upholstery needle with thread that matches the rug's edge. Stitch the edge of the rug to match the rest of the rug. Continue stitching until you have covered the frayed area. Cover loose threads with your stitch. Use a tight stitch to give the rug's edge a full appearance.

    • 5). Tie the end of the thread. Use the pointed end of the seam ripper to tuck the loose end of the thread under a tightly secured thread.
