How to Replace a Kitchen Water Valve

    • 1). Shut off the main water supply to the house. When you remove a water valve, you will open the water supply pipe. Turn off the circuit breaker to the water heater while the main water supply is off.

    • 2). Disconnect the faucet water supply hose from the water valve with a pair of channel lock pliers. Turn the connector counterclockwise to remove the hose from the water valve.

    • 3). Loosen the compression nut that secures the water valve to the house water supply line with a wrench. Disconnect the nut completely from the water valve, and pull the water valve away from the house pipe.

    • 4). Remove the taper compression fitting on the end of the house pipe by pulling it off the pipe with the channel lock pliers. Slide the compression nut off the house pipe.

    • 5). Take the water valve to the home improvement to purchase the replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same diameter fittings as the faulty valve. Most water valves will come in a kit which will include the compression nut and compression ring.

    • 6). Slide the compression nut over the house pipe with the threads pointing away from the wall. Slide the compression ring over the house pipe with the taper end pointing away from the wall.

    • 7). Wrap the threads on each end of the water valve with plumber's tape. Place the end of the water valve over the house pipe, and thread the compression nut over the threads to secure the water valve until hand tight. Tighten the compression nut one full turn with the wrench.

    • 8). Thread the faucet water supply hose to the water valve until hand tight. Tighten the hose connection one full turn with a wrench. Turn on the main water supply to the house. Check the water valve for leaks, and open the valve by turning the knob counterclockwise to supply water to the faucet.

    • 9). Turn on the circuit breaker to the hot water heater.
