Demolition is the tearing down of building structures. It can be done in a number of different ways using various kinds of equipment. This process of tearing down buildings has taken place for hundreds of years. There are many reasons buildings are torn down. It is usually done to make space for a new construction. In other cases it may be performed to bring down an unsafe structure. This process is not to be confused with deconstruction which is essentially taking certain parts of a structure apart. But the main frame is still in place.

Bringing down a building takes expert skills. It is a dangerous job that requires knowledge on the process and experience with the type of equipment involved. The type of equipment used to bring down a structure will depend on the size that height of the structure. Normally, elevated platforms, cranes and bulldozers are used in the process of bring down a structure.

Tall buildings may require the use of a wrecking ball. Wrecking balls are typically used for brick buildings. They are used when a lot of control is needed when it comes to the location of the fallen structure. But wrecking balls are an antiquated method of demolition. Today, more modern equipment is used.

The process cannot start until certain security measures have been taken. The first matter of business is getting the right city permits to even perform the job. Once this is done, there are certain public notices that must go out. People will have to be cleared away from the site. Then the actual site must be prepared. All the the buildings utilities must be turned off to prevent major accidents. There are several other preparations and security measures that measures that must be taken.

The first equipment used during the process of tearing down a building is usually hydraulic excavators. Hydraulic excavators are used for shorter structures. This is another piece of equipment that allows the crew to control where the building will fall.

After the structure has been razed there is another process which involves the clean up. The crew supervisor will make sure the site has been thoroughly cleaned of all debris. This is a major safety issue on the site and the remains of the structure must be cleared. Hoe rams are used to remove large pieces of brick. And shears are used to remove the steel framework.

The demolition of tall buildings that sit in densely populated areas will require the use of explosives. In this case, the building is imploded to the ground. This is a very fast process that literally takes seconds to bring a building down. The crew must be highly skilled to prevent serious accidents from occurring.
