What Happens if a CFL Breaks in My Chandelier?
- Check with your local recycling center to determine the process for disposing of CFL bulbs. CFL bulbs should not be merely tossed into the trash without consulting your local recycling center. In all likelihood, you will need to take the bulb to the recycling center.
- Turn off the power before trying to extract the CFL bulb. In addition, turn off your air-conditioning/heating system. Ask people to leave the room and move pets to another area of the house. CFL bulbs have a small amount of mercury, so also open a window. Carefully try to unscrew the bulb from the chandelier. Wear work gloves if the bulb has sharp points. Pull out small shards or powder residues that have gotten caught in the chandelier bulb base with sticky tape.
- Place the broken bulb and its parts in two plastic bags. If your local environmental outfit allows disposing of bulbs in the trash, then you can place the bagged bulb in the trash. Keep in mind that you should not allow a CFL bulb, or any other product with mercury in it, to be sent to an incinerator. Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Take precautions the next time you are installing CFL bulbs in your chandelier. Screw the lightbulb into the socket by the base of the bulb rather than by gripping the glass. If you grip the glass, you run the chance of breaking the bulb and hurting yourself. The next few times you vacuum in the room where the chandelier is hanging, turn off the heating/air-conditioning system and open a window. Leave window open for about 15 minutes after you finish vacuuming.
