The Pros And Cons Of Sliding Shower Doors

Sliding shower doors, which are also commonly referred to as bypass doors, are commonly used in bathrooms.
They may be used along with a bathtub in order to create an enclosed showering area around the bathtub or they may be used to help create a standalone shower unit.
Sliding shower doors have a number of pros and cons that must be weighed carefully when determining whether or not this is the best shower enclosure option for the bathroom.
Perhaps one of the biggest pros to a sliding shower door is the fact that is uses very little space since the doors slide past each other.
As a result, there is no need to make sure there is clearance for a door outside of the shower stall.
While the sliding aspect of these doors is a space saver, sliding shower doors can also be problematic.
Many homeowners experience troubles at one time or another with the doors getting off track or caught on something that has managed to work its way into the track.
In addition, some homeowners find the tracks themselves to be unattractive when adhered to the top of their bathtubs.
Similarly, for homeowners with children, the track can make it difficult for little ones to climb in and out of the tub.
When purchasing sliding shower doors, it is important to keep in mind that the space they will cover must be equal to twice the width of the door.
That way, each door can be slid to fit entirely behind the other and create an opening for entering and exiting the shower.
For this reason, this type of enclosure is most often used with a bathtub.
Unfortunately, this set up does restrict access to the bathtub and can make cleaning the tub somewhat difficult.
Furthermore, since the doors to overlap somewhat when they are closed, it can be difficult to clean the area where the two doors come together.
Homeowners that purchase lower quality sliding shower doors may also experience problems with the rollers getting worn out or failing to operate correctly.
With quality units, however, this generally is not an issue.
Furthermore, through proper maintenance, problems with the track can be avoided.
Since caring for these doors is really quite simple, most homeowners do not find this to be a problem.
