How to Make a Valentine Shirt

    • 1). Draw or print out a design for your Valentine shirt. Hearts, the word "love" or other designs can be used, but choose simple shapes. Rectangular shapes are the easiest to work with. Carefully cut out the pattern and place it on your shirt. Decide where your appliqué will look best and pin the pattern in place.

    • 2). Cut a fabric scrap 1/2-inch larger on all sides than your pattern. You can use a single scrap for one reverse appliqué or several scraps to create a more complex design with multiple appliqués. Both knit and woven fabrics are appropriate.

    • 3). Cut narrow strips of fusible webbing or hem tape. Apply around all sides of each fabric scrap. Iron the scrap into place on the wrong side of your Valentine shirt, positioning it to fit neatly under the appliqué pattern.

    • 4). Stitch around the pattern, working with the outside of the shirt facing up. Use a basic straight stitch or running stitch. This can be done by hand or with a sewing machine, as you prefer.

    • 5). Remove the pattern. Make a small slit in the center of your shape, being careful to cut through only the outside fabric of the shirt. Trim away the shirt fabric within the stitching, exposing the scrap beneath. Your Valentine shirt is now done and ready to wear.
