  Most registered nurses work as part of a health care team in clinic or hospital settings, according to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Registered nurses with extensive experience, who choose to pursue advanced studies, may elect to be advanced practice nurses. One field of specialization for advanced practice nursing is the certified nurse midwife (CNM), whose primary focus is providing advice and care to pregnant women. In order to qualify as a CNM, a registered nurse must satisfactorily complete a graduate level program that is accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
  
  

University of Cincinnati

• University of Cincinnati offers a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with a focus on Nurse Midwifery. The program consists of 87 credit hours and requires 900 clinical hours. Coursework includes classes in Advanced Reproductive Dynamics, Advanced Physiology, Scientific Basis for Clinical Reasoning, Pharmacology for Advanced Nursing Practice, Differential Diagnosis for Women's Health, Nurse-Midwifery and others. The University of Cincinnati estimates students can complete the Nurse Midwifery program in ten quarters of study. Baylor University

• Baylor University's Louise Herrington School of Nursing offers a doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) program for advanced practice nurse midwives that adheres to the standards of practice established by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. The program is designed to prepare nurse midwives to provide health care to women and families using a family-centered approach to medicine. The nurse-midwifery program involves an eight semester course of study and requires 75 credit hours for completion. This post-master's program requires 12 months of full time study, but may be completed in 24 months on a part time basis.
