How to Make Biblical Costumes for Kids
- 1). Dress your child in a housecoat in a neutral color like white or tan if he's playing a general Bible character like a shepherd. Or, choose a brighter colored robe in blue or purple for a child playing a magi or wise man in the Christmas play. A housecoat with multi-colored stripes is best for a little one portraying Joseph and his coat of many colors in a church production.
- 2). Place a pillowcase or hand towel on your child's head to resemble the head garments men and women wore in Bible days. Push the fabric to the front of your child's head so it partially covers the forehead, and ask her to hold it in place. For a little girl portraying Mary, a white pillowcase is best, as the color symbolizes purity. A towel in a metallic shade like bronze or silver is fitting for a child playing Queen Esther.
- 3). Tie a ribbon around the towel or pillowcase to secure it, with the knot at the back.
- 4). Add accessories to the Bible costume that specifically fit the character your child is portraying. For instance, a paper crown worn with the housecoat and over the fabric headpiece can denote a king like Herod, the evil king who wanted Baby Jesus killed, or Solomon, the wisest man in the Bible. A wig made of long tresses is suitable for a child playing Samson in lieu of a headdress. Or, give a little girl a small basket filled with synthetic wheat tares or bamboo shoots to represent Ruth, a woman whose hard work in the fields attracted her future husband Boaz, which led her to become a descendant of Jesus.
- 5). Purchase sandals for your children to wear that are similar to those worn in Bible days. Flip flops with thin leather strips are ideal, or multi-strap brown sandals will make the costume appear more authentic.
