"Sit Spot Sit" is the first lesson learned in any dog obedience training.
With their wagging tail and boundless enthusiasm, dogs easily become a part of any family and it is not long before the new pet is taken everywhere the family goes.
Sometimes Spot can embarrass the family with his antics and lack of manners.
Enrolling Spot in dog obedience training will alleviate this embarrassment.
Dogs have the capacity to learn what we teach them but it requires reward, attention and consistency.
Follow these three tips to train your dog.
Tip #1: Reward and Punishment One of the quickest ways to train a dog is to reward them for good behavior and to punish them for bad behavior.
If you are consistent in your treatment of the dog, he will quickly learn what is and is not acceptable.
When the dog performs as expected, he should be rewarded.
This enforces the good behavior that you expect from your dog.
Tip #2: Attention, Attention, Attention Dogs will follow your commands but only if the dog is paying attention.
If Spot is occupied on something else, he will not follow your commands.
Using reward and punishment, train your dog to always look at you when you call their name.
Once you have their attention, you can give them commands to follow.
Tip #3: Consistency The quickest way to undo all your training is to not be consistent in your interaction with your dog.
If you reward your dog and then later punish him for the same behavior, he will become confused.
The next time you give that command he will not know whether to obey or not because he is not sure if you will reward or punish him.
You must be consistent in your training so you can achieve the results you want and to build a strong relationship with your dog.
Many dog owners are reluctant to enroll Spot in dog obedience training.
If you follow these three tips you will have Spot following all of your commands in no time.
