Iguanas are strict herbivores. While an iguana may ingest insects in the natural course of feeding, iguanas prefer plants, fruits, and vegetables. If you have an iguana and want to keep a fresh supply of food on hand to feed your pet, consider growing a garden that contains all of the foods iguanas prefer and need for a healthy life. - Greens should make up about 40 percent of your iguanas diet, according to the Green Iguana Society. Growing fresh greens and feeding them to your iguana is the most effective way to keep your pet happy. The optimum greens include turnip, mustard and collard greens, watercress (recommended over lettuce) and dandelion greens with the flowers intact.
- Fruits are another essential source of vitamins for your iguana. Bananas, apples, pears, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes and a variety of melons are some of the fruits you can grow to keep your pet full of nutrients. Fruits should make up 10 percent or less of your iguana's diet.
- In addition to greens, iguana's need other vegetables. Vegetables (in addition to the greens) should make up about half of your iguana's diet. These vegetables are easily grown in a home garden and include carrots, green beans, mushrooms, bell peppers, peas, parsnip and squash. Cucumbers, mushrooms and zucchini are also valuable food additions.
