For a modelling career in fashion, art nude or glamour, it's important for you to realise that there is more to becoming a model than just standing in front of a camera and looking beautiful. It is important to learn some posing techniques and positions. With this simple guide, as the model, you'll learn the difference between a typical snapshot portrait pose and the look and feel that professional models portray, be it a fashion head shot or a female nude.

As a good model you will need to know many different poses for the type of modelling career you wish to pursue, and it will take practice, practice, practice. Here are a few things a potential model should be aware of.

Posing Naturally: Practice your posing to a mirror will only help you to a certain point but it shouldn't be neglected. The best practice is experience as a model, which is important. This will help you to pose naturally in front of a camera. So the more experience, the better and easier it will be for you to feel comfortable, and to be able to pose as if you've just walked ‘in to the picture'.

Hands and Face: Pay attention to your facial expressions. A pose is virtually dead if you look blank and your eyes seem vacant. You should be able to close your eyes, imagine a thought, open your eyes and sell that thought. Practice this technique and your photos will come alive. For that sexy look, tilt your head down and look straight ahead. If the focus is not on your eyes, then a look away from the camera will appear wistful and of being ‘in thought'. For your hands, let them fall naturally into position whenever possible. Remember, you want to be yourself – on purpose. Note that fingers that are kept slightly apart and pointed away from the camera look slender and interesting, not short nor clenched.

Prepare some Poses: Before you go to your photo shoot, have prepared at least ten good modelling poses you really like from magazine pictures, a Posing Guide or poses you've learned from previous photo shoots. Take some time to practice your selection until you have it right and have the confidence of knowing you look great doing these poses.

With a little preparation, you should be ready to face the camera.
