Classification of Retinoblastoma

There are several classifications for retinoblastoma, including the Reese Ellsworth Classification, the Philadelphia Classification of Retinoblastoma, the International Classification of Retinoblastoma, and American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) 7th edition classification (Table 2). In 1969, Ellsworth published the concepts behind the Reese Ellsworth classification. In 2004, 35 years later, our group developed a new classification, the Philadelphia Classification of Retinoblastoma, on the basis of the anticipated outcomes of chemoreduction. Later, on the basis of concepts from this classification, the International Classification of Retinoblastoma was devised. Currently, most clinicians use the International Classification of Retinoblastoma because of its international appeal, simplicity, and ease of recall. The AJCC classification has both a clinical and pathologic classification, but for the purposes of this review article on chemotherapy for retinoblastoma (without enucleation), the clinical classification is listed.
