HDMI to Cat5 Converters

    How it Works

    • The converter includes two parts. The sender unit sits with the HD source, such as a DVD player. A receiver unit goes with the display, such as a TV. Cat5 cables connect the two units from 100 feet or more.

    Converter and Extender Differences

    • An HDMI extender does the same thing as a converter. The only difference is that the converter checks for any errors or corrupted data that passes through the cables. The converter corrects the signal if errors are found. The converter is also compatible with many video display resolutions.

    Cost

    • HDMI converters were first introduced in 2007 and are now harder to find. As of 2010, used and new converters cost about $350 to $450. Extenders range in price from $40 to $700. For about $70, 100-foot HDMI cables can be purchased and boosters can be used to keep the digital connection sharp. Boosters cost about $15 to $100.
