    • 1). Open any Office program. The first thing to notice is the Office button in the upper left. The Office button is Microsoft's answer to the Windows Start button in the lower left. Think of the Office button as the Start button for Office programs. It essentially replaces the File menu from previous versions of Office in Office 2007. Without third-party software the ribbon is completely un-customizable in Office 2007. Note that Microsoft backtracked with Office 2010, which brings back a version of the File menu to the Office ribbon and allows users to customize the ribbon.

    • 2). Take note of the Options button on the Office menu that appears when you click the Office button. It's at the bottom next to the Exit button. Each program has its own Options and Exit buttons here; for example, if you're in Word the button will say "Word Options" and "Exit Word." When you click the Options button, notice that the options have been rearranged somewhat and that the first options tab is comprised of the most popular options.

    • 3). Notice the ribbon across the top of the screen where the menus used to be. The ribbon is actually a tabbed interface, with each tab having its own set of icons relevant to the name of that tab. Each program in the Office suite has its own unique Home tab in the upper left with the other tabs differing per application. Again, in Office 2010 the File tab is in the upper left and the Home tab immediately follows it.

    • 4). Check out the grouped commands on each tab of the ribbon. The groups are surrounded by lines demarcating groups from each other. If a group has additional unseen items you'll see a small arrow in the lower right of the group. Click the arrow to see the additional items.

    • 5). Notice that the "TRK," "OVR," "EXT" and "REC" shortcut buttons on the bottom of the screen in Word are gone. Also, the drop-down menu that used to control the view percentage (zoom) in the applications has been replaced by a slider scale.
