The Woman with the 140 Pound Tumor:
Oprah and Dr. Oz opened the show with guest Linda Rittenbach to talk about her discovery that she was carrying around a 140 pound tumor. Linda, a mother of 2 adult children from Oregon, gained weight steadily for the last 20 years, but always felt that something was wrong or different. Linda's doctor expressed that she was gaining too much and needed to lose weight, but did not think any other serious conditions existed.
Thinking she had the flu Linda went into the ER where the doctor discovered that her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery. It was during the surgery that the doctor found the tumor.
Dr. Oz pointed out a major step that Linda was able to take that most do not - getting a second opinion. Only 10% of patients get second opinions and of those people 33% have a change in treatment. It was due to Linda going to the ER to get treated for what seemed like the flu that she learned of her very rare tumor.
It took one surgery to remove Linda's appendix and one part of her tumor and an additional surgery to remove the majority of the tumor. Dr. Oz used models of Linda's tumor to show how large they were. Linda's tumor was cancerous but she is not in cancer treatment today.
Information on Dry Drowning for Parents:
Another headline this summer what the case of a 10 year old boy who drowned hours after being in a swimming pool. Dr. Oz wanted to explain what dry drowning actually is so that parents know the signs to look for in their children.
Dry drowning occurs when a small amount of water remains in a child's lungs after swimming on being in a tub of water and prevents the lungs from working properly. Water enters the lungs not by swallowing but by aspirating the water or breathing it into the lungs. When children go under water and swallow, the water enters their stomach, but if they breathe under water it enters the lungs.
Dr. Oz traveled to South Carolina to visit with Cassandra, the mother of the 10 year old boy who drowned. Johnny, Cassandra's son, showed no signs of distress after swimming, but did have changes in his behavior later on.
Cassandra and Dr. Oz visited the pool, where Johnny went swimming this past summer for the very first time, so Cassandra could explain what had happened that day. Cassandra described how Johnny seemed exhausted after swimming and as he got out of the pool she realized he had a bowel movement in his pants. Cassandra gave Johnny a bath and put him to bed.
When Cassandra checked on Johnny that night, he had foam coming out of his mouth and nose. Paramedics arrived within minutes, but Johnny had died from cardiac arrest.
Dr. Oz explained that children are not able to feel when they have aspirated water like adults are. Parents need to watch their children for extreme fatigue, shortness of breath and changes in behavior such as Johnny's accidental bowel movement. Dr. Oz expressed that such an event is very rare since children are more likely to swallow water than breathe it in, but to still be alert and watch their behavior after swimming or taking a bath.
Is There Really An Exercise Pill?:
Sandra from Australia asked via Skype about a news article she read about an exercise pill and if it was actually being developed. Dr. Oz described a pill that is being studied that is based on research that compared prime athletes to people who can't lose weight to find a biological difference. The research uncovered "energy factories" that help athletes exercise more effectively. The pill is currently being studies in rats to see how supplementing "energy factories" effects the outcome of exercise. Dr. Oz shared that a pill may become available in the future.
Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?:
Laura from Indiana called in to ask Dr. Oz if there is a cancer risk from using cell phones. Dr. Oz first stated that there have not been "smoking gun" studies to show a relation between cancer and cell phones, but that electromagnetic fields are given off by cell phones. These fields have an effect, but doctors are not aware of the exact effect at this point - more studies need to be done.
Dr. Oz suggests guidelines of avoiding use when reception is low, use a wireless headset but don't keep it in the ear, switch ears while using, use for children only in emergencies, & not to keep the phone on you at all times.
Prescription America:
Dr. Oz issued his third "Prescription America" to join his previous 2 issued in the spring of 2008 (cutting out soda for 2 weeks and eating 100% whole grain bread with olive oil before dinner for 2 weeks). This prescription is taking 20 deep breaths ever day. To do this, lay on your back with 1 hand on your stomach and 1 hand on your chest. Inhale deeply raising your stomach and exhale pushing your stomach in. Dr. Oz recommends doing this 10 times in the morning and 10 times at night.
Remembering Randy Pausch:
To end the show, the last few minutes were dedicated to remembering Randy Pausch, the professor from Carnegie Mellon who delivered his Last Lecture which was watched by millions on YouTube, Oprah and read in his book of the same title. Randy passed away this past summer after his long fight with terminal pancreatic cancer. Randy passed away in his home with his wife and 3 children and through his fight inspired many.
