Trendy Ways to Make the Bed

    Layers

    • Create a snug and luxurious-looking nest out of your bed by layering up sumptuous pillows. Remove all the pillows to start, then flatten the duvet over the mattress and smooth out all the wrinkles. Starting from the headboard, layer up first the pillows you sleep on, then lean more decorative cushions and pillows against them. Start with the largest in your collection, and work down to the smallest. Have pillows of various shapes, such as round ones and bolster pillows. Choose fabrics to match the rest of your decor, such as pastel colors and laces for a romantic look, or rich reds, golds and russets for a boudoir appeal.

    Shabby-Chic

    • Make your bed with vintage lace coverlets, lace-edged cushions and pillows and ruffle-edged duvets and valances for a genteel, shabby-chic look. A vintage lace table-cloth can double as a coverlet if you can't find the real thing, and plain cushions can be given the feminine look with a hand-stitched lace edging. Stand your pillows up against the headboard so they're leaning at an angle, then casually half cover them with the duvet. Throw a lacy coverlet over the bed so it covers the duvet and the pillows, then arrange cushions on top of the lace.

    Retro

    • Choose the psychedelic colors of the 1960s or the bold, geometric designs of the '70s for the fabrics you put on the bed. Duvets should be thin, or choose blankets and sheets with a thin quilt instead. Plump the pillows up but leave them flat on the mattress, then turn the top sheet over the blanket and quilt so the top quarter of the bed has the bottom sheet showing. Tuck the blankets under the mattress, forming a neatly sealed envelope, or leave the sheet and quilt hanging casually over the edged.

    Minimalist

    • To make the bed in the minimalist style you need storage. Under-bed storage is the most convenient, since the necessary bedding that you use during the night can quickly be stowed away. Strip the bed of everything that's not strictly necessary. Take away extra pillows and leave only one on a single bed or two on a double, or larger, bed. Remove the duvet or top sheets, fold them then hide them away in cupboards or drawers. Leave a plain, natural-colored cotton, fitted, sheet over the mattress. Smooth down the sheet to remove every wrinkle, pulling it tight at the corners for the best fit.
