    What is System Restore?

    • When Microsoft released Windows XP, it came with a new feature that had never been done before. This feature was called "system restore" to save your computer, work and sanity when an error occurs. If a big change has been made to your computer, you will be able to restore your computer to a time before the event or new installation. The system restore element monitors your computer at all times so that it can capture the moments that could eventually cause problems with your computer.

    How Does System Restore Work?

    • System restore is set "on" by default, when you are using a newly installed copy of the Windows operating system. In the "on" position, it runs silently in the background, at all times, waiting until you are ready to use it. System restore will create a restore point at different times of the day or week, depending on the settings. When you check for a restore point to go back to, click it and began the process of rolling back your computer to a previous state. If the roll back did not help your computer, you have the choice of removing the restore, and going forward once more.

    How to Use System Restore

    • To use the system restore feature to undo a recent change, go through the "Start" menu, "All programs," "Accessories," "System tools" and click "System restore." A box will pop up and walk you through the instructions of using the system restore. From here, you will be able to use system restore, but you will also be able to create one. If you will be making a new change, try to create and name a new system restore. This will allow you to make changes and try different things with your computer, but still be able to undo them without experiencing major software and hardware damage. If you don't have the space to accommodate the system restore feature, you will be able to turn it off or lower the frequency of saved restore points to save space.
