    Fixing the Sound on a Computer by Checking the Hardware

    • 1). Make sure your hardware is functioning. Check the speaker port or headphones port to ensure that everything is plugged in correctly. Test the sound. If there is no audio, move on to the device drivers.

    • 2). Click on "Start," then "Control Panel."

    • 3). Click on "System and Maintenance."

    • 4). Click on "System."

    • 5). Click on "Device Manager."

    • 6). Click on "Sound, video, and game controllers"; right-click on each item and click on "Update Driver Software..."

    • 7). When you've finished updating the "Sound, video, and game controllers," click on "System devices." Find all items that have anything to do with audio, like the items named "High Definition Audio Controller" or "System Speaker." Right-click on them and click on "Update Driver Software..."

    • 8). Close all windows and restart the computer to allow the changes to take effect.

    • 9). If you hear the computer's start-up sound (those musical notes that tell you the computer is coming alive), the problem it's fixed. If not, you'll have to do a diagnostics test.

    Fixing the Sound on a Computer with a Diagnostics Test

    • 1). Restart the computer.

    • 2). Press "F2" repeatedly as soon as you restart the computer to enter "Setup Mode."

    • 3). On the "Setup" menu, find "Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)," highlight it and press "Enter."

    • 4). Highlight "Sound" on the list and make sure that it's turned on. If it's off, turn it on by pressing the left or right arrow key until the item line reads "ON."

    • 5). Press the "Esc" key to exit "Setup Mode" and continue starting Windows. This should fix your computer's sound problems.
