Our Prison System in the United States is substantial indeed.
We have more prisoners per capita than in any other country in the United States.
It is a costly and huge infrastructure to maintain.
It costs billions per year and is labor intensive.
Presently we are having a tough time in staffing our corrections institutions.
The United States Army is not the only group, which is having a tough time recruiting.
There are significant issues with retaining and recruitment in the corrections industry as well.
Many corrections professionals are using various tactics to reduce turnover, it is extremely expensive to train new personnel.
Part of the problem is that they are competing with local enforcement, state police, DHS and other agencies for the same type of individual.
Additionally the US Military has called back many folks who were reservists to active duty and many of those were already gainfully employed in corrections.
In fact corrections is pleased to hire those with some military experience, especially Military Police.
In some prison facilities the staff is down by a third and is potentially a dangerous situation in case of prisoner unrest or takeovers, which are becoming more common, although the real answer is for society to produce fewer criminals.
Some facilities have attempted to change this trend with moderate success, by developing a more inclusive structure of leadership and decision making from the bottom up focusing on the strategies of large tech corporations with regards to human capital methods.
Other facilities and agencies are quick to point out, that if you want them to stay, you have to pay them what they are worth and make the job rewarding.
But no matter what is done, this is a real crisis, that we must deal with in our civilization, so think on this or we will have to turn it all over to robots in the next decade or so.
