Starring: Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Randy Quaid Directed by: Ang Lee A story of ranch hand Ennis del Mar (Ledger) and rodeo cowboy Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal), two young men who meet and fall in love in 1963 on a shepherding job on "Brokeback Mountain" in Wyoming.
The film explores their lives and love for the next 20 years.
The men look like they are out of a Marlboro advert.
But they are more just than that they are complex, sensitive and extremely endearing.
The two of them are left on a ranch where they care of the hills.
It is here that they begin to develop feelings which are beyond their grasp.
It takes time for them to decide to work on these feelings.
But once their barriers are opened these men fall blindly in love.
A love so strong that it might conquer their very existence.
The film based on a short story Annie Proulx is written with such beauty and humane understanding it leaves you lost for words.
Some moments makes you forget all the tags these men will be associated with.
This is the story of love where everything is just not said.
Some of the moments when they break down just because they don't know what to do with what they have will leave you breathless and in tears.
They eventually marry two other women and begin separate lives.
But they still see each on the Brokeback once every year.
There was a huge hue and cry when the movie released.
But it might happen even after I write this.
There are images which these characters are exposed to when they are younger.
This makes you understand their initial confusion.
Love doesn't conquer all in this movie it just shows us lessons of what you need to sacrifice.
One of the greatest moments is when Heath Ledger talks to his daughter after the end of the affair.
It was after that when he goes to his cupboard and sifts through his closet and whiffs his friend's clothes.
Then comes the moment when he says "Jack, I swear..
..
".
It is something which this movie leaves you with which creates an emotion you wish you will never loose out on in life.
These two had it in them to love one another they were no sinners they were people who were stranded by their own emotions.
I would advice you to watch this with the same open heart the director painted these characters for the screen.
Ang Lee who is blessed with an envious filmography gives this one his Midas Touch.
It is a movie which will be remembered through the ages for its bravery.
The performance by Heath Ledger will smother you with a lot of pain but yet leave you waiting for his next.
Michelle Wiliams as his wife is so understanding which makes her performance futile.
This movie is a winner by heart and a masterpiece for the thought which went into making it.
Thank you Ang Lee for this great treasure.
