How to Make a Square Centerpiece Stand
- 1). Trim a 5-inch long piece of the large dowel using a band saw or hand saw.
- 2). Grind a tapered shape into the side of the dowel piece on the drill press grinder. Make a conical shape by running the grinder along the outside edge continuously. Spending more time on one end than the other (this might require trying a practice piece to get the hang of it). Leave one end of the dowel piece the same diameter it was when you started, but grind the edges gradually to a smaller shape on the other end, roughly two-thirds the size of the original.
- 3). Cut a 12-inch square piece of the furniture-grade plywood using the band saw. Adjust this size according to the dimensions of the centerpiece(s) you want to display on the stand.
- 4). Grind the edges of the square plywood piece on the drill press grinder. Round down the corners and taper all four sides into round edges.
- 5). Apply glue to generously coat the top (small end) of the dowel piece.
- 6). Center the square wooden piece over the dowel piece and press down. Wipe away any excess glue that oozes out on the underside of the stand using a damp rag. Place a small heavy item on the top of the stand to weight it down against the dowel piece. Let the glue dry.
- 7). Drill three screws into the top of the square wood piece down into the dowel piece.
- 8). Sand the entire piece by hand with sandpaper.
- 9). Stain the wood with a clean rag and wood stain. Follow the instructions on the stain jar.
