    • 1). Double-click on the "Computer" icon on the Windows desktop and establish the letter of the crashed disk drive. Typically, the main system hard disk drive is letter "C," the CD-DVD drive is letter "D" and all other installed drives are "E" onwards, in alphabetical order. For this article, the crashed disk drive letter is "E."

    • 2). Click on the Windows "Start" button and type "Command Prompt" in the search text field. Click on the "Command Prompt" option in the list that appears from the search. This will open a Windows Command Prompt window.

    • 3). Type "chkdsk e: /f /r" without the quotation marks then press "Enter" on your keyboard. This checks your crashed disk drive for errors. If the program finds any bad hardware sectors on the disk drive, the "Chkdsk" function isolates these sectors and makes repairs to the disk.

    • 4). Restart the computer.
