How do I Install Windows 98 on a Dell Dimension 5150?
- 1). Boot to the Windows 98 setup CD and choose to install the operating system. If the system will not boot to the CD and the system has a floppy disk drive, insert the startup floppy disk in the floppy drive while the Windows 98 installation CD is in the CD drive, and then reboot. Alternately an internal or external floppy disk drive may be attached to the system for this step.
- 2). Follow the prompts to install the system, selecting the default answers to each of the prompts. These settings can be easily modified after the installation is completed.
- 3). Allow the hardware-detection phase to continue by choosing "Next" or "Finish" at each prompt.
- 4). Remove the CD and reboot the computer to start loading drivers. Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties" > "Hardware" > "Device Manager", or go to "Control Panel" and choose "Device Manager".
- 5). Select a device that is marked with an exclamation point or question mark and double-click on it.
- 6). Choose to update the driver. Insert the driver disk for the device when prompted and direct Windows to locate the driver files for Windows 98 on the disk. Alternately, download the drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
- 1). Insert the Windows 98 installation CD into the CD ROM drive when Windows is running, and choose to upgrade Windows.
- 2). Enter the key code that came with Windows 98, usually located on a label attached to the computer or within the disk's packaging. This is the 25-character alphanumeric sequence that is the license code for the individual installation of Windows on one computer. Follow the prompts to install the software. Remove the CD and reboot when completed.

- 1). Create a folder on the C drive of a working computer with CD-ROM support, and copy the contents of the Windows installation CD to that drive.
- 2). Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode by choosing "Start" > "Shutdown" > "Restart in DOS Mode", or alternatively, boot the computer to a DOS startup disk by placing a startup disk in the floppy drive and rebooting. Delete all of the files and folders on the drive, except for the one that contains the Windows 98 files, by using the command "deltree *.*" at the root prompt, which is the main DOS prompt designated by the symbol "C:\". This will delete everything on the hard drive, which is necessary for a clean installation. All data will be lost at this stage, so do not perform this step if there are files on the drive that need to be saved.
- 3). Change in the folder that contains the Windows 98 files by using the command "cd win98" (substitute the name of the folder for win98) and then run setup.exe by typing "setup" and pressing "Enter". Follow all of the prompts to install the operating system. Remove the CD and reboot when complete.

Insert the driver disk for the device when prompted, and direct Windows to locate the driver files for Windows 98 on the disk. Alternatively, the drivers may be downloaded from the manufacturer's website and placed in a folder on the computer. Repeat this step until all drivers are functioning correctly.
