How to Obtain a Plumbing License in Hawaii
- 1). Meet the basic requirements. For a journey worker plumber license, you must have five years and not less than 10,000 hours of plumbing work in compliance with the Uniform Plumbing Code. For a master plumber license, you must have two years' experience as a licensed journey worker plumber.
- 2). Download and complete the "Plumber License Application Form" located under Resources. Submit application and fee (fee amount is listed on application form) to address noted on application form.
- 3). Take the plumber exam. Once your application is approved by the board, you will be sent an examination registration form. The completed form needs to be sent directly to the testing contractor along with the examination fee as noted on the registration form. A copy of your approval letter must also accompany your registration form and registration fee.
The exam is based on the UPC. The closed-book exam consists of two parts. Part one tests understanding of business and law, and part two asks questions on the specifics of your trade. Questions probe understanding of construction codes and regulations, tools, equipment and methods and trade materials. You will have two hours to complete the exam.
Preparation materials can be purchased from Experioronline.com (see Resources), the testing and assessment provider for the plumbing exam of the state of Hawaii. - 4). Pay the licensing fee. Upon passing the examination, you will be required to pay a fee to obtain your license. The fee is listed on the application. This fee is only to be paid if you successfully pass the exam and qualify for the license.
