There are more and more people nowadays that tend to hire the wrong general contractors.
Most of the time they end up hiring another contractor to redo all the jobs that has already been done.
It is easy to determine if a contractor is reliable.
All you need to do is choose carefully and follow some of the steps below.
Describe the project that you want to be done and ask people to bid only if they have the necessary requirements.
You can limit the amount of contractors by specifying that they will need to have 2-4 years' experience in the business before they are considered for the job.
Contractors who have longer experience in the business do not always mean they are reliable and can provide quality work.
It is just a way to have a smaller group of applicants.
Once you have a small group of general contractors bidding for your project, scheduling a one on one interview would be ideal if you want to get to know the contractor.
This is also the chance where you can ask different questions such as what they do in case some emergency happens such as unavailability or laborers, supplies are almost gone and some other things that are often encountered during a building project.
Asking for some references would also be a good way to determine if a general contractor is reliable.
You can also ask their previous clients if the contractor did his job perfectly or did he just do it for the sake of getting paid.
References and previous clients a good source of information if a contractor is reliable but you as a client should still perform some background check and other research regarding the contractor that is bidding on your project.
The last thing that can help you decide if the contractor is reliable is to look at his or her portfolio.
This will show how the project turned out.
This can also contain some before and after pictures of the projects he has worked in the past.
If you are still unsure if the general contractor is reliable, make them show their skills by giving them a 1 or 2 weeks on the job trial and see who performs the best.
Though it is not a guarantee that the one who performs best is a reliable contractor, it will help you decide whether or not to hire them.
