How to Select and Install a Wireless Router
- 1). Be sure to select a wireless router that is compatible with your model of computer. Different signal standards are used on different wireless routers. Make sure that your wireless card or adaptor has the same signal standard as your wireless router.
- 2). Connect the wireless router to your computer's modem. Read the instructions that comes with the router on how to do this properly. Generally, an ethernet cable is used to hook up the wireless router to the computer. Many wireless routers will have more ethernet ports for additional connectivity.
- 3). Install the software, if necessary. In order for your computer to recognize your wireless router and network, you may need to install software that will come with the wireless router.
- 4). Set your wireless network settings. Some wireless routers come with different security or channel features. You can set a network password and activate encryption methods in order to make your wireless network more secure. If there are a lot of other wireless networks in your area, try switching to a different channel to avoid interference and to speed up your network connectivity.
