Grandfather Clock Instructions
- 1). Choose a suitable location for your grandfather clock. Position the grandfather clock on a flat, level surface and adjust the leveler on each of the four clock legs, if necessary, to ensure that the clock will not tip over. Avoid positioning your grandfather clock near air conditioners, heaters, vents or drafts as extreme changes in temperature can affect the movement.
- 2). Use the key that came with your grandfather clock to unlock the appropriate panel to access your clock's movement. Depending on the brand and model of your grandfather clock, the access panel may be located on the front, side or back of your clock.
- 3). Locate the pendulum guide in the movement of your grandfather clock. Note that the pendulum guide looks like a thin metal rod that extends from the middle of the clock movement. Remove the pendulum from its packaging, if necessary, and hang it on the end of the pendulum guide.
- 4). Hang each of your grandfather clock's three weights on the appropriate cable pulleys. Look at the bottom of each weight to determine the correct placement; the weights will be labeled "Left," "Center" or "Right."
- 5). Move the hands of your grandfather clock to set the time. Grab your grandfather clock's minute hand and move it counterclockwise until both the minute and hour hands are in the desired positions.
- 6). Swing the pendulum in your grandfather clock to start its movement. Reach into the clock and pull the pendulum all the way over in either direction. Release the pendulum and let it settle into an even swinging motion.
- 7). Raise the weights in your grandfather clock every seven days to keep the clock running properly. Use the crank that was included with your grandfather clock to raise the weights in cable drive clocks. Pull the chains to raise the weights in chain drive grandfather clocks. Avoid pulling the chains so far that the weights touch the bottom of the movement; instead, leave 1 to 2 inches of space between the weights and the bottom of the movement.
