    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button. Type "cmd" in the popup menu's text box. Press "Enter" to open the MS DOS command prompt.

    • 2). Type "chkdsk c: /f" into the command prompt. Replace "c" with the hard drive you want to scan. The "f" switch attempts to fix the errors on the hard drive, if any are found.

    • 3). Press "Enter" to start the scan. If you attempt to scan the system disk, a message displays saying the Chkdsk utility will run the next time you boot the computer. If you receive this message, reboot the computer, and Chkdsk runs in MS DOS before Windows loads.
