Introduction to Healthy Eating: Healthy Eating habits for Families

Healthy eating can be difficult. We're a fast-paced, fast-food society and seem to favour the quick & easy solutions to pretty much every aspect of our life. Meal and snack times are no different! Between grocery prices and prep time, it's often easier to go with the quick and easy solution when suppertime rolls around.

Does this sound familiar?

So, how do we make sure our kids (and ourselves) are getting the proper nutrition without breaking the bank or spending all our time in the kitchen? Do you want my first piece of advice?

FORGET the 4 basic food groups! Yep, that's right. Stop analyzing to the detail how many servings of each you're getting, the calories, grams of fat€¦etc. Just be smart about what you put into your body!

A personal coach of mine once put it this way: we would freak out if we put something other than gasoline into our car engine because we know gas is what it needs for optimal performance. If you pulled up to a gas station and it said Castoreum at the pump, I`m guessing you would ask the attendant what the heck that is before putting it into your gas tank. Yet, the majority of people have NO idea what ingredients they are consuming in their processed foods and they put them in their `tank`.

Our body gets it`s fuel from the food we consume€¦why wouldn`t we provide the best fuel possible.

When we eat foods our body can`t handle, it stores it away. Basically, it turns into fat. Eat the right foods, and our body can break down what it needs, and eliminate the rest. Sounds simple.

So, back to my point about just being smart about what you put in your body. Think natural, think colourful€¦think prehistoric. If it has to be consumed within days before spoiling, that`s a good thing. If it can sit in the fridge or in the pantry for months and still be fine€¦there`s a lot of preservatives in there!

By the way, for those of you that are curious as to what Castoreum is, it`s secretions from the anal glands of a beaver and is used to enhance the flavor of raspberry candies and sweets. Gross, huh€¦My question is: how the heck did they ever figure that one out! I mean really, who decided to squeeze crap out of the butt of a beaver and see how that would taste when mixed with raspberries!

Anyway, I`m starting to ramble! I`ve put together my favourite recipes on my website to healthy family mealtimes be fun, fast and affordable - I hope you enjoy!
