Cynicism Awaits

You'll meet all kinds of people in life, especially once you graduate school. New places, more exposure, more people and a variety of experiences. The downside of this is that as time passes, you'll begin to realise that most people you meet are all different kinds of douchebags. They'll call when they are in trouble. They'll suddenly remember you exist when they need your help or need something done. They'll want to meet you so they can massage your ego for a bit before they finally stop beating around the bush and say what they really mean to say. "Can you do me a favour?" "I really need your help…" Beyond a point the first and the only thing you want to ask these people is "What do you want from me?"

You know you're in trouble when you actually like one of these people. Then you have a hard time figuring out the difference between your friends and the people who remember you only when they need something. The question is this: How do you know who is here to stay and who will leave the second they don't need you anymore? You don't know. You can't always know. That is the unfortunate truth.

Sometimes it will feel so hopeless that you'll begin to question every new person you meet. Instead of feeling excited you'll be suspicious. Cynicism and the wisdom from past realities will threaten to eat you up. You'll walk the fine line between faith and failed expectation.

Guaranteed, you'll trust the wrong people. Guaranteed, you'll make excuses on their behalf. Guaranteed, you'll make these mistakes over and over again. You are only human after all.

The only thing you can hope for is that at the end of the day you'll have at least a few out of these countless people you meet who you can come home to. People who care for you, who want to see you succeed and be happy. The ones who have your best interests at heart and will gladly be there for you whenever you need them. They'll keep it real, keep you grounded, tell you what you need to hear and not what you want to hear.

You may not meet them every day or even every year. You might only be able to talk to them every once in a while. But when you do, the time that has gone by without them will cease to exist and it will feel like you were with them just yesterday. Maybe they'll be your family. Maybe they'll be your lover. Or maybe, they'll be the best friend you've known all your life.
